AMI10 - Grade 9 Music

Grade Nine Instrumental Music (Open)

 COURSE DESCRIPTION (from the Course Profile: Music, Grade Nine Open, Catholic)

 This course emphasizes the creation and performance of music at a level consistent with previous experience and is aimed at developing technique, sensitivity, and imagination. Students will develop musical literacy skills by using the creative and critical analysis processes in composition, performance, and a range of reflective and analytical activities. Students will develop an understanding of the conventions and elements of music and of safe practices related to music, and will develop a variety of skills transferable to other areas of their life.    Prerequisite: None

 TEXTBOOK INFORMATION

 Students will be using the “Essential Elements 2000, with DVD – Book One” method book for the study of their instrument.  This book will need to be purchased at the cost of $12.  Please send in the $12 promptly to as to ensure a quick start to the performance portion of the course.

 UNITS

 The following units will be incorporated into the completion of the curriculum.  Please note that these units do not occur chronologically but simultaneously. 

 

Unit 1

Listening

 This unit involves listening to live and/or recorded performances to understand the language of music, its historical and cultural context, and how effectively its composers and performers communicate to their audience. The music analyzed will be drawn from a range of cultures and the Catholic faith tradition. This unit is intended to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of music through practical skills including interval, melodic and rhythmic exercises through creative work.

Unit 2

Theory

Theory involves learning the symbols, concepts and conventions used in music. By completing the expectations, students will be able to converse and express themselves using appropriate musical terminology.

20 Hours

Unit 3

Performance

This unit involves the practical application of performance skills and knowledge of theory as they relate to the performance medium. Students sing or play, individually and in ensembles (e.g., using voice, band instruments).

50 Hours

Unit 4

Music Appreciation

This unit is intended to develop in students an understanding and appreciation of music through practical skills and creative work. Students demonstrate an understanding of rehearsal, performance, and audience etiquette appropriate to various cultures and the Catholic faith tradition. Students explore the various roles associated with music activities to develop an understanding of the relationship between the audience and the performer. Emphasis is placed on identifying musicians who have been inspired to write music for environmental issues.

Unit 5

Creating

Creating is the innovative application of performance skills and knowledge of theory as they relate to the performance medium. Students engage in arranging and composing activities. Students improvise, interpret, and compose music, using a variety of media including computers.
